partitiontable type "unknown"

FYI
ESXi 5.0 may need minutes to return the command partedUtil get /device.
Then it may help to boot into a ESXi 5.1 LiveCD and rewrite the partitiontable.
In this case partedUtil reported the table as type "unknown" but was able to read the volume.
Recreating the partitiontable helped
