creating a lab

I am trying to create a standalone lab on an esxi 5.1 host.

I created 2 vm’s and a vswitch that is not connected to a physical adapter

I added both vm’s to the vswitch

How do I get the vm’s to communicate?  What IP’s do I use?

I have tried several combinations of settings, but nothing works.  They cannot ping each other.

What am I missing?
