I have a question:-

suppose we have esxi host with 2 versions one with esxi4.1 and another with esxi5.5 and vm is running on esxi5.5 with latest vmware tools but with hardware version7. is it possible to migrate this vm to esxi4.1 without any issue even with up to date vmware tools?

High Performance Change - Guest Reboot?

Our hosts are Dell poweredge servers and we recently change the bios to high performance. Now the guest are requesting reboots when you login. Why would the guest OS detect any changes at all? Is there a way to prevent this?

Thanks!

Connecting to iSCSI on Windows 2012 Box

I have been trying to get iSCSI set up on my network with little success.  I set up the target on a Windows 2012 box and I can get other Windows 2012 boxes to connect but not my ESXi 5.1 box.  When I try to connect, I get a login failure event (0301) and nothing happens.  Is there anything special I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks

can't access iSCSI target from second ESX box

I have successfully connected to an iSCSI target running on Windows Server 2012 from one ESX 5.1 box and created a datastore. Unfortnately, I can't get a second ESX 5.1 box to connect to the same iSCSI target. I have added the IP address of both ESX boxes as acceptable initiators for the Server 2012 target.

I have also successfully configured the iSCSI software adapter on the second ESX box to point to the target. It even found the IP address with a dynamic discovery.

Unfortunately, even after I set all this up I can't "Add Storage" under the "Storage" option in the Configuration tab for the ESX box. When I choose "Add Storage" no targets show up to choose from.

Is this simply a limit of ESX boxes, which only permits one ESX initiator per iSCSI target?

For what it's worth, I am using vCenter to manage my ESX boxes.

Win 2012R2 iscsi not connecting

Hi,

I have two ESXi 5.0 update2 boxes with are not able to connect to an iSCSI target on a Win2012R2 Server.

I always get the error 0301 back.

One of the ESXi has a iSCSI Connection to a QNAP device, therefore I know that the iSCSI itself is working.

All machines are in the same Network with no Firewall turned on (also the fw on the 2012 Server is off).

I can connect to the iSCSI target from my Windows 7 PC. Therefore I asume that it is working also correct.

Here is a screenshot from the 2012 Server:

And a screenshot from the ESX Server:

Does anybody now what I'm doing wrong?

ESXi 5.5 ASUS H97M Plus, Intel I218-V "No Network Adapters" Error

$

Hello all!

I'm experimenting with ESXi on my home computer, but keep running into the "No Network Adapters" error, which I understand is because the 5.5 default drivers don't support the Intel I218-V on my Asus H97M-Plus motherboard.

I've looked through these forums and others, and understand that I can use the ESXi Customizer v2.7.2 to add the Intel drivers. The latest version I can find in a .VIB file is net-e1000e-2.3.2.x86_64 which don't seem to work. The latest version I can fine on Intel's site is e1000e-3.0.4. I've tried using the Customizer to insert that version without success.

Also, I'm trying to run ESXi from a bootable USB drive which I create from the ISO using Rufus-1.4.9

My system specs are:

Asus H97M-Plus

Intel 4790S

32GB DDR3-1600 RAM

What's the next step?

Thanks,

ESXi 5.5 U1, MSI MS96D2 board, X3840 CPU, can't boot after passthrough Atheros 5B22 wifi PCIE card

Recently, I installed an ESXi 5.5 U1 on my home server. After the installation, everything looks nice.

I used ESXi client to config my server and passthrouth the Atheros 5B22 PCIE wifi card, add this hardware into the ROS VM.

But when I start the ROS VM, it showed the start porcess stopped at 58% and then the connection to the ESXi host lost. The host did not response to the keyboard (PS/2), so I had to press the power button to restart the host.

When I restarted the host, it could not start up and stop at the yellow screen, the progress bar did not reach the end, and could not access even via SSH. After that, I just could not access the host via the ESXi client and SSH, finally I re-installed the whole system.

But after I passthrough again, the same problem raised.

Did you any guys meet the same problem before?

Thanks so far.

Junk Objects for vCenter and ESXi in AD Schema

What are junk objects for vCenter and ESXi in AD Schema?

vCenter Search is very Slow in Linked Mode but OK with Standalone vCenter

As i am assuming this is due to search they need to execute in multiple vcenter servers database that's why it might be slow but is there any other reason for this this is what i would like to know.

Presenting replicated LUN's to DR site. Rescan failure.

$

Hey guys,

Thought I would post this here to see if anyone has seen or experienced this issue we had during a DR test.

Background on environment:

2x sites (Head Office and DR) connected via Fibre

2x VMware vCenter Servers (One each site)

2x 6x Node ESXi 5.5 Clusters (One each site)

2x IBM V7000 SAN replicated async using Global Mirror

We use our DR site as a DEV/Test Environment outside of DR.

So this is what happened. On Saturday we simulated a DR at our Head Office site. By this I mean we shut down all VM's running on the cluster including the Head office vCenter server. All that was left running was the hosts. We then switch the direction of our mirroring making Head Office LUN's Read Only and making DR LUN's R/W. We the present these LUN's to the DR cluster.

So at this point we shutdown all DEV/TEST workload and there are only a handful of non DEV/TEST servers running on the DR cluster (DR vCenter, Domain Controller, Core network Services)

We then proceed to rescan the storage of a DR Host and add the DR LUN's one by one without resignaturing the LUN. (We did this once in the past when in ESX v4). This process of rescanning and adding the storage to the DR host took forever. And what I expected was once scanned and added to the first host the others do their normal rescan and automatically add the volumes. This didn't happen. It was taking in excess of 20mins per lun to scan in the add storage wizard.

On these DR hosts we have probably 80 LUN's assigned with the DR/DEV/TEST LUN's assigned together. Some are RDM's.

We ended up rolling back, switching the mirrors back and undoing everything.

We have done this process in the past when on vSphere v4.1 and expected it to work as planned but now I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Garrick

Adding this "Devices.Hotplug=False" parameter to a VM.

Will it restrict our ability to add hot cpu ??

application asks 3200 Mhz for oversubscription calculation with no reservations what does this mean

Hi,

What does it mean when an application asks 3200 Mhz for oversubscription calculation with no reservations what does this mean?

I have a 2 socket 8 core with HT enabled  2 Ghz host with esxi 5 at my disposal?

So would a  2vCPU VM be undersized for this app ? how do i give them so called "3200 Mhz for oversubscription calculation with no reservations"...

Appreciate inputs...or i am undersized and a single core should be 3200 Mhz ?

Thanks

Connecting a NAS to more than one virtual mahine

So have two virtual machines and currently have the NAS connect to one of the virtual machines but would like it connected to both. I know without the hypervisor I cannot set up two LUN / targets with iscsi to two different physical servers so they both see same data on the NAS. Would go bonkers for a lack of a technical term, haha.

So by going to the VM settings > adding hard disk > connect to existing virtual disk > browse to my NAS and selecting the virtual disc that the other server connects to going to break anything? I assume ESX will handle the traffic to the NAS from the two VM's without making a mess / potentially losing data but just wanted to make sure first.

Powercut... Luns on EMC San are blank - unformatted

Probably not the right forum however i wonder if anyone else has seen this before and has any suggestions other than restore from backup...

I have a EMC Clariion san (FC)

2x esx 5.5 connected via FC

We had a power cut in the early hours. the ups shut down the ESX servers and guests and the san powered down its self (as they do to save the cache to the disks etc)

When power fault was fixed and power restored this morning i booted everything up and logged into my vcenter server. I could see all the paths to the luns from each ESX server but no volumes. When i add a volume it allows me to choose a LUN to format. EEeeeeek. thats literally 7 blank luns...

Now i have backups which is fine but some of the servers failed to backup via Veeam because it was mid power failure. I have only lost a days work on these servers but i would like to try and get back the volumes if possible.

So firstly - has anyone seen this before and if so did you manage to recover.

Has anyone any suggestions to try recover?

how the hell can it happen?

Converter causes receiving ESXi Host to drop connections, initiate a core dump and reset network adapters.

Good Morning Everyone,

I'm stumped here and could use some guidance and reference points from everyone's expertise. I will try to describe the esxi environment and the issue experienced and we can duplicate it.

COLO Environment:

Cisco UCS Chassis with four blades (latest greatest system, just installed by another vendor)

ESXi 5.5.0 Build 1746974

Each Blade has four 10GB uplinks in to a Cisco Interconnect and out to a 10GB CORE switch

vNIC0 and 1 are in a vDS with all the defined usable port groups in an "Active/Active" state

vNIC2 and 3 are in a vSwitch for iSCSI boot for ESXi. in an Active/Active State

NETAPP storage connected to Fabric Interconnect via redundant 10GB uplinks.

vCenter is a VM located on ESXi1

Network Environment:

1GB MetroE from COLO to HQ office where all the existing servers to be migrated are located

Network traverses two separate subnets with ACLs from a 172. to a 192.

Ping responses between both sites are 1 to 2 ms.

The issue:

The latest VMware Converter Standalone 5.5.2 is installed on the vCenter Server.

1. Connect Converter to 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host and select the downed server to convert

2. After configuration modifications, initiate the conversion

3. Two minutes in, the converter fails on network

4. While troubleshooting, looking at the vCenter we initiated another conversion failure we noticed the ESXi host that was receiving the conversion drops the network adapters and reset them causing the vm's on that ESXi host to lose connectivity. The ESXi does a core dump and resets the adapters then everything reconnects. This happens in seconds but the issue is quite alarming. I've never seen this before and unless I'm google searching the wrong thing can't find anything about it.

Reduplicated the Issue:

We were able to reduplicate the issue outside of the UCS chassis by doing the following:

1. Took Dell PowerEdge R900 and installed the same version of ESXi on to the server

2. Plugged the network adapters (this time 1GB network adapters and same IP Subnet) in to the same switch of the Hyper-V server from above

3. Installed vmware converter on a different 2008 R2 windows system locally on the same switch as the ESXi host and Hyper-V host.

4. Initiated the same conversion

5. The same issue above happens the server blips, core dumps and resets the network adapters.

Any thoughts or ideas are graciously welcome. We are opening a ticket with Cisco and VMware but also wanted to throw it out in to the community.

Thanks Everyone!

Fred

How to diagnose hung guest OS

$

I have a guest OS which is hung, even VMware tools shows installed but not running.

Even the console doesn't respond to C-A-Delete.

I checked the esxtop, which looked fine in ds/storage, cpuready, io, network, et.c.

There is only one VM in the server.

When I reboot it, its' fine, but it hangs within a day or two.

Suggestions anyone?

Tripwire with vSphere 5.0

$

Our security/compliance team is looking to scan our ESXi 5.0 Hosts with Tripwire. I think earlier Tripwire builds for ESX would log directly into the Host but with the advent of ESXi, I assume that access methodology has changed. I'm trying to minimize access to vCenter (or ESXi Hosts) to exactly what is needed for Tripwire. The compliance guys don't really know. I'll probvably set something up with the vendor but, I wanted to check here first. Does anyone here utilize tripwire and familiar with the specific requirements for functionality?

NetXen NXB-10GCX4 on ESXi 5.5

Hello!

The NetXen 10G card with part number NXB-10GCX4 is listed on the VMware HCL but only through ESXi 4.1.  Is there any way to get this card working on ESXi 5.5? I don't care how unsupported it is, this is just a large performance testing lab.

# lspci

0000:05:00.0 Network controller: NetXen 10G Ethernet PCI Express CX [vmnic2]

but esxcfg-nics -l does not show vmnic2

I saw this, but it just tells me to look at the HCL: VMware Compatibility Guide - IO Driver/Device Details

Do I need to build my own vib?  Could I get the old vib off of a 4.1 install and install it on 5.5? Where does one find vibs? Could I export the vib from 4.1 and import it in 5.5?  can i just copy the net_nx_n.v00 file from one to another?

4.1: VMware_bootbank_net-nx-nic_4.0.558-3vmw.510.0.0.799733

5.5: VMware_bootbank_net-nx-nic_5.0.621-1vmw.550.0.0.1331820

Any advice, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
