Hi, I do not currently use resource pools but often feel I should look more in to it. On our four node 5.1 cluster we have 16 web servers (among other VM's) that are exactly the same and perform the same function. I was wondering if those would be good candidates to add to a resource pool so they can grab resources as needed? I tend to statically overcommit the RAM and CPU on those "just in case", but maybe that is foolish if there is a better way. Thank you.

vmxnet3 and MTU 4500
Looking to enable jumbo frames on several of our ESXi 5.0.0 VM's which are doing iSCSI to an IBM Gen2 XIV.
The XIV supports jumbo frames -- but only at MTU 4500 rather than the more common 9000.
Our VM's are using vmxnet3 vNICs and these apparently only lets us choose between an MTU size of 1500 and 9000. Any way to adjust this to 4500? Would 9000 work and just auto-drop down to 4500 at the TCP/IP level thanks to MSS? Should we use the E1000 driver instead which appears to have more MTU size options?

VM Backup solution
Hi,
I have a ESXi 5.1.0 799733 server which hosting three VMs (one is AD+SQL2008R2, one is a SharePoint 2010, one is XPP3+Veeam+Vsphere).
I am trying the free Veeam Backup but it failed on two manual backup (I attached a 2TB harddisk to the ESXi HOST and the XPP3 VM use it as a E: drive)
Veeam reported that the SharePoint2010VM is 150GB and the exteranl USB HDD is 2TB
Please advise
If possible, please share your Backup software / solution...
On top, I am considering to either acquire the Essential Plus or the Essential (as they included the Data Protection software ?). Any comment on this ??

vCenter Server is not working After p2v
Hi,
I have installed vCenter server 5.1 in one physical machine. Using vCenter converter I am taking backup of my vCenter server. It is working ok. But after p2v when I start my virtual machine, vCenter server is not working even ODBC conncection is fine.
Can anybody suggest that any setting I need to do for that.

ESXi 5.1 AD authentication
I am using windows 2003 active directory.
first I install a esxi 5.0 without vCentor, and config to use AD authentication.
when login in the with the vSphere Client, I check the "use windows session credentials" box, it can login.
now, I install a esxi 5.1, the same config as the esxi 5.0.
but when login in the with the vSphere Client, I check the "use windows session credentials" box, it can not login.
the login format is : "domain-name\user-name"
if I type uncheck the "use windows session credentials" box, and type the use name as "user-name@domain-name", and the user active directory's password, it can login.
it is my problem or the esxi 5.1 problem?

ESXi 5.1 host accepts no network connetctions
Hi guys,
I installed a new 5.1 ESXi Server from Scratch and there is no network activity!
Through boot process I can see the Intel E1000 driver is loaded.
The physical Link is up and shown correctly on Console too.
But there is no way to ping another host!
The Server was running with 5.0 before without any issues...
It happens with another Testserver too. Both with Intel Nics that were supported in 5.0.
Is there a new trick to get it work? ;o)
I gave it a static address...

Multiple Gateways
Hi All ,
Is it possible to add an addional gateway to VM kernel port .
Requirement is we want to segrigate the management vlan traffic and the iscsi traffice .
Say for managmenet - use vlan 99
and Isici - vlan 9
Note : we are using esxi 5.1

After upgrading the virtual hardware from 7 to 09 we are getitng the following error on this virtual Guest .

UCS iSCSI Boot related question- use iscsibootvSwitch for Datastores as well?
VMware - ESXi 5.0
H/W - Cisco UCS Blades
Stg - NetApp (iSCSI)
I just got iscsi Boot working for our ESXi hosts (running on Cisco UCS Blades). It works great but I have a "best practice" question now.
I see that VMware auto-creates a new vswitch named "iScsiBootvSwitch" and assigns the vnic used for iscsi boot .. ok, makes sense. The question I have is, should I use that same vswitch for VMFS Datastore traffic as well or create a dedicated vNIC in my UCS Profile which I can dedicate to another vSwitch? I assume it'll work if I use the iscsi vswitch for datastore traffic, I just didn't know if there were any downsides to doing this.
One other slight issue is now I also have two separate initiator groups on the NetApp - one for accessing the VMFS datastore LUNs and another for accessing the iscsi boot LUN. Looks like I may have to put the new initiators (from the ESXi hosts doing iscsi boot) into the existing initiator group and assign that igroup to the iscsi host LUN as well. NetApp does not allow an initiator to be in more than one initiator group, unfortunately.

How to do delete RDM (physical mode) mapping file via ESXCLI
I made a big booboo! I deleted a virtual machine from disk but for got to remove the RDM mapping before I did that. Now I can no longer see the RDMs when I'm trying to map them to a new vm. I'm sure this is because the ESX server believes that the RDMs are still mapped to the vm that no longer exists due to the vml file. How do I delete the mapping file via command line.

Need help with QLE220 HBAs urgently
Hi all.
I have 3 Dell R810 servers with QLE220 HBAs.
The problem with the HBAs is that the ESXi 5.1 cannot recognize them.
The first thing you'll answer is that those HBAs are not officially on the HCL, and I'm aware of that.
However my servers are only 2 years old and I'm guessing I'm not the only one with the problem.
Dell says that they oficially support ESXi 5.1 on this type of server ,and yes, in my install i have used the dell customized CD/DVD.
However there are no drivers for those HBAs on that CD/DVD.
I have looked all over in the forii and discussion groups all over the Internets, and thus far I have found the following links mildly helpful:

and this is where I downloaded the driver bundle for ESi 5.x from Qlogic:
I installed it using Update Manager and it installed allright, however there was no mention of the driver for my HBAs.
I then cruised the Internets for a different solution. And found the following solution:
which applies to ESXi 5.0 and even though it seems like a hack, it did make sense.
However in the process I seem to have hit an obtacle in that when trying to run the
tar -xvf scsi-qla.tgz (i.e. scsi_qla.v00)
I get a :
tar: invalid tar magic
error message.
I sense that the solution lies somewhere in this direction, however I'm baffled by this error.
I understand that VMware may have implemented a driver signing option in 5.1 to prevent tampering or rooting, however I must stress that
I'm really desperate on this.
Please don't tell me go sort it out with Dell or the guys that sold you the servers.

"No VIBs specified with -n/--vibname or -v/--viburl." when trying to install OMSA VIB
Hello all!
I am trying to install Dell's OpenManage Server Administrator using ESXCLI. I have downloaded the "OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-6.5.0-542907.VIB-ESX50i_A02.zip" file and copied it to an iscsi datastore that my host is config'd with. I am also using vcenter. I am trying to use the command below to install the vib:
vcenter IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
host IP: yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
datastore name: datastore
esxcli --server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -h yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy software vib install -d [datastore]/VIBS/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-6.5.0-542907.VIB-ESX50i_A02.zip
When i run the command, i get the following message:
[No VIBs specified with -n/--vibname or -v/--viburl.
Please refer to the log file for more details.]
When i run the 'software vib list' command, i do get results, so i am pretty sure its connecting to the host properly.
Can anyone shed some light as to why the installer isnt working/how to get it to work?

How do I copy VMDK files off Esxi file system?
Hello,
I have HDD with ESXi install which is not bootable, I'd like to copy just VMDK files off those HDDs to external HDD. What is the easiest way to do that? I envisioned something like booting system from USB drive and then copying files over that way but I have no idea what FS ESXi using and what USB boot image I shall be using.

Is it possible boot Linux guest os from SAN?

Because I was asked to install RHEL5 guest os on our ESXi5.0 as follows. I know /dev/mapper/mpath(xx)
means Linux MultiplePath but I think booting ESXi, Physical Linux/Windows Server from SAN is possible.
I never configure multiplepath on Linux guest os and I wonder if it is possible to boot RHEL5 which is vmware guest os from SAN?
If possible, Any documents or others? Or any idea to implement the following partition on Linux guest Server.

/dev/mapper/mpath(xx) swap 4G

Two ESXi Hosts with all Live Servers.

I have a requirement to simulate an Enterprise level network as far as possible, with two ESXi5 Hosts & on those I want to install all OS like Linux(CentOS, Debian), UNIX(Solaris, FreeBSD) & Windows(server 2003, server2008), integrating all those. And on those OS i want to implement all servers & applications as real time environment, like Mail server, FTP server, web server, LDAP server, RADIUS server, DHCP, DNS, AD server, Exchange server, MySQL, SAP etc. I want to make it heterogeneous network. And i want to implement all the functionality as far as possible like on ESXi5(FT, Migration, Load Balancing, Clustering, DirectPath I/O etc), on Linux(RADIUS, LDAP, Mail, web, FTP, DNS, etc), on Windows(AD, Exchange, etc) with all server replications. And it should be accessable to the public world.
My 1st system:
CPU: AMD FX-8120 (8 cores, 4.0 GHz)
RAM: 8GBx8(32GB) @ 1866MHz
Mobo: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 (with IOMMU enabled)
