Please help.. Trying to determine if an HP NC510F / NC510C (Nextgen/Qlogic NXB-10GXSR, NXB-10GCX4) will work with Vmvware 5.5...

The compatibility guide states that esxi  up to 4,1 U3 supports it.  But I cannot find anything regarding 5.0, or 5.5 working with this card.  I'm guessing that unfortunately I am out of luck and the support for this card has been taken out of 5.0 and above.  But as I've discovered for example, a lot of servers that are no longer listed on the 5.0+ compatibility charts that use to be listed on the 3.x and 4.x charts still work.  I'm hoping that this is the case for this card also.. (via a firmware update from Qlogic)  Does anyone have any experience with these fiber cards on 5.x

?

Hello, I have a problem on my Windows Server 2003. I have 2 partition which are C and D. C is my system and D is my data. My C is running out of space and I want to extend it. But I can't do that with the third partition tools because it is unable to extend to the system hard drive. What should I do ? Please help me..

Thank You.

ESXi 5 Add an existing lun to datastore without formatting

We have two hosts running VMWare **ESXi 5.1.0**. Both are connected to a RAID 5 array via iSCSI.

The lun is an existing lun with vm on it but it is not reconized by the hosts after the reboot.

it is visible in vSphere Client in **Configuration > Storage > Devices** but not in **Configuration > Storage > Datastores**

Somebody have an idea how can we fix this ?

These are some commande we tried on the host

    ~ # voma -m vmfs -f check -d /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.60080e50002e0074000003975193cbf3

Checking if device is actively used by other hosts

Running VMFS Checker version 0.9 in check mode

Initializing LVM metadata, Basic Checks will be done

ERROR: Missing LVM Magic. Disk doesn't have valid LVM Device

ERROR: Failed to Initialize LVM Metadata

VOMA failed to check device : Not a Logical Volume

    Total Errors Found:           0

With this we can see the LUN.

Mismatched Guest OS Types

Hi.  What would cause a mismatched guest OS problem?  This just happened to me after removing a snapshot on a VM?  See the attachment of my screenshot.  You will see that the vSphere Web Client reports the correct type but the vSphere client application reports the incorrect type.  What would be the fix.  Thanks, Adam

16Gb HBA FC connections Setting Fibre Channel HBAs

$

I was reading through about using 16Gbps HBA adapters and as per that :-

vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center

ESXi supports 16GB FC HBAs, but there is no support for full end-to-end 16GB connectivity from the host to array. If you use 16GB FC HBAs running at 16GB, to get full bandwidth, create at lease two 8GB connections from the switch to the storage array

So as per the above comment I'm bound to use a 8Gb storage switch else it won't be supported.

So I was just trying to visualize how this connection will look like as if I'm using a 8Gb storage switch, how do I make connections from 16Gb HBA to that switch which is just 8Gb & from that 8Gb switch two connections to storage array in order to use 16Gb bandwidth?

Also is there any specific Fibre cable that is required for 16Gb connection?

5% CSTOP but no overcommitment

Hi all

I have a single 8 Core Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise VM running on a Single 2 x Quad Core with HT (16 logical core) ESX 5.1 u1 server. Veeam one is telling me that over the last 1 hr the CO-STOP is on average 5.39% . If I look at the metrics raw in milliseconds in vCentre , over the 1 hr interval it says average 16391. Now, doing the math (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2002181):

(CPU summation value / (<chart default update interval in seconds> * 1000)) * 100 = CPU ready %

therefore (5 min data interval for 1hr)

(16391 / (300 * 1000) ) * 100 = 5.46

Why am i seeing Co_STOP if the vm is the only thing with access to the hardware?

Host Cluster to Datastore Cluster Design

$

Hi There,

We have a storage migration project at the moment I have an opportunity to redesign the existing "Host Clusters" and the "Datastore Clusters" mappings. Keeping in mind HA, DRS, different Tiers of storage, Management and all the best practices I'm thinking along the lines of the following (I've simplified this just for the example)

Host Clusters

Datastore Clusters

Production

Production-Tier1

- Datastore1 (ssd)

- Datastore2 (ssd)

- DatastoreX (ssd)

Production-Tier2

- Datastore1 (15K disks)

- Datastore2 (15K disks)

- Datastore3 (15K disks)

Test

Production-Tier2

- Datastore10 (15K disks)

- Datastore11 (15K disks)

- Datastore12(15K disks)

Each hosts in the Production Compute cluster will see ALL datastores in the Production Tier 1 & 2 datastore clusters and vice versa I.E. fully meshed. There will be some shared standalone datastores that are seen by ALL hosts which will be used for Templates, ISO's, and sDRS migrations.

I'm curious what other companies are doing and if there's any gotcha issues with the above?

Cheers

Second NIC takes over as Management Network

$

I have an ESXI 5.5 dev lab on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a dual port GbE NIC (Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5708).

My base setup was one NIC port configured (vmnic0) with a Standard Switch (vSwitch0).  vSwitch0 had a Virtual Machine Port Group (for the VMs) and a VMkernel Port (for the Management Network).  Everything worked good at this point.

When try to configure the second NIC port (vmnic1) in a different network switch and different network range to connect to iSCSI... vmnic1 took over as the Management Network even though it does show as being the Management Network.  After that, I am no longer able to connect or ping the IP of vmnic0.

When configuring the vmnic1, I added Connection Type of VMkernel.  I did not choose to use the port group for management traffic.

When I look at the console, and choose to Configure Management Network I see only selected Network Adapter being vmnic0.

Am I misunderstanding the configuration of the Management Network?  If not, does anyone have a suggestion on what may be wrong or how I can diagnose?

Thank you for your input!

I upgraded my virtual environments to Cisco UCS Release 2.2(1d) over the past couple weeks.  We have had a few VM's freeze, and one error I have noticed in all the event viewers is

LSI_SAS

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

Some have it more than others.  I went back in history and this only occurred in each environment after upgrading to UCS 2.2  Is this a known issue?  I am running ESXi 5.1 Update 2 on my hosts.  each host is a B200 M3

Dear team,

on one ESXi host we have 192GB RAM and on that esxi host we have 5 VMs which r powered on and one VM is powered off, IF I check ESXi summary and performance tab it show ESXi host is using almost 140GB of RAM out of 192GB, In performance tab it show current total current memory usage is 73% and to troubleshoot further if I check individual VM memory utilization then total VM memory usage is not more than 50GB then y it's showing 73% I.e. 140GB usage , need ur assistance to check which process is taking high memory , please find the attached ESXTOP batch output file.

vCenter -- VM CPU alarm does not repeat after setting frequency as 5 mins

$

Hi All,

I set the threshold values in the default VM CPU alarm on VC -- warning as 75 and alert as 95.

I set the frequency as 2 mins under the reporting tab of the alarm.

I ran cpu hogger on the VM and brought CPU usage as 100 percent.

I cleared the alert manually (CPU hogger still running)

theoretically the alarm should have come up again for the VM after 2 mins as the CPU is still at 100%; however this is not happening.

I am running VC 5.1.

Any suggestions on how to proceed.

Thanks

Sil3124 or 3132 controllers support in ESXi 5.x?  I found a lot of references to these controllers working in ESXi 4.1, but not ESXi 5.x?  Anyone work on this?  Have a solution?
