Printing issues with GPO and Clones

Printing problem-gpo printers not getting pushed to clones

I have a printer server (virtual) and 160 vm's.

I push the printers to the clones (windows 7) through group policy on server 2003 and this worked really well for a long time.

Recently in the past month, something changed and now the clones only some of them get the printers not all.

In a lab of 30, only randomly 15 or so will get the printers.

I have compared one clone that gets a printer with a clone that doesnt and nothing is differnt and nothing is in the event logs. I did the group policy wizard to compare. The clone that doesnt get the printer is exactly like the one that does.

I made a new server 2008 and put the printers and drivers on it, and tested it once in a lab of 30 and everyone got their printer. So I went fourth and added all printers and took the other server offline and this week is the same story. Not every clone is getting printers.

Any ideas?

esxcli storage vmfs unmap - doesn't reclaim all available storage?

$

We are using 4TB thin provisioned LUNs on our netapp.  I have a 4TB datastore mapped to this lun (snapshots/reserve are turned off on the netapp side).

I am testing space reclamation with the esxcli storage vmfs unmap command.  I filled the datastore to about 95% full, so around 3.8TB.  I then deleted half of everything, and the datastore in ESXi now shows 2TB free.  So, I run the esxcli unmap command, and it recovers only about 100GB of space.  If I run it again, it'll recover another 70GB.  If I run it again it'll reclaim another 70GB.  Etc and so on.

So my question is, why is the unmap not reclaiming the full 2TB of space I freed up, and I need to keep running the unmap command over and over and over?

Hi,

we have two RHEL6.3 VMs which need 15 minutes to boot!

The problem happens when starting the network interfaces in vmsvc.

Host: ESXi 5.1, latest 5.1 tools from repo installed, two vmxnet3 interfaces

Both interfaces are connected to two different portgroups on the same swtich with same VLAN ID (!) and one uplink.

Please help how to find out the cause of this.

Thx Rainer

ESXi 5.5 vShield Endpoint Blue Screen Issues.

Hello,

Has anyone else dealt with the following issue or know of a workaround? We have this exact issue in our production environment and have had to revert from using vshield endpoint antivirus. I noticed the Resolution has changed from "no workaround" to "contact vmware support" Unfortunately they will not speak to me because I don't have an active support contract with vmware directly.

Any information appreciated!

Driver for Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709 (Dell PowerEdge R610) needed

Hi everyone

I have 3 Dell PowerEdge R610 server which run VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1. When I installed VMware I used the following Dell customized image: VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64-Dell_Customized_A02. Now I would like to install the most recent drivers for the Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5709 NICs but I am struggling to find the right one.

~ # vmware -vl

VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-1746018

~ # esxcli network nic list

~ # vmkchdev -l | grep vmnic2

0000:02:00.0 14e4:1639 1028:0236 vmkernel vmnic2

I searched through VMware's compatibility guide based on this information:

VID=14e4

DID=1639

SVID=1028

SSID=0236

I got results for the VID, DID and SVID but unfortunately the SSID does not match. The compatibility guide only lists SSID 0235 but there is no SSID 0236. Is this important?

Based on the results I got (see VMware Compatibility Guide: I/O Device Search) I am tempted to choose this driver:

ESXi 5.5 U1  bnx2 version 2.2.5f.v55.6  7.10.xx  async

Is there anyone with a similar setup who could verify that this is indeed the correct driver? Due to the different SSID number I am not sure. Thanks in advance!

Fault Tolerance slowed User Application

I turned on Fault Tolerance to 2 VM's on our system.

Knowing that the VM's could only be a single vCPU.

Knowing that only four on the DC could be FT.

What I did not know and have found that now the workstations using the SQL server that is FT all have 'delays' or 'sluggishness' while using the application.

It is like the FT put a very significant Overhead on the system and it is so inhibiting to the Users that I had to Disable FT.

Has anybody else found this overhead? How did you fix it?

We have a Very small network here and I can't imagine that there is Any shop that would accept this kind of 'slowness' to their applications.

Drive Failure

Hello,

This is the second time in three months I've had hard drive failure on a brand new HP Prolaint 380p Gen8. First time I noticed the LED status on the physical machine, as well as in Vpshere client it showed the failure.

I have a second drive that has failed, however this time by physically checking the machine I noticed it, however in Vpshere it shows everything is normal under storage.

Max IO Size - iSCSI Software Initiator

Hi Folks,

I'm working to get the VMware iSCSI software initiator to transmit IOs larger than 128KB.  I've tried increasing the MaxRecvDataSegment, FirstBurstLength and MaxBurstLength values for the software initiator ... with no success.  Is there a way to increase the max IO size?

Thanks,

Cold migration of MSCS cluster node guests?

$
0
0

Working on setting up an MSCS cluster across 2 hosts.  The hosts are ESXi 5.5 build 1892794.

My shared disks are RDMs in physical compatability mode which I've attached to a second SCSI controller in physcial sharing mode.

My cluster validation wizard completes successfully.

However, if I power off the guests, migrate them each to a different host (with FC connectivity to the RDM LUNs), power them on, and then rerun the cluster validation wizard the wizard reports disk i/o errors on the arbitration and failover tests.

I've learned that when I see these errors I can unregister the VMs, detach the storage from the host, reboot the host, reattach the storage, re-register the VMs, and then the validation is a success.  However, this is a bit of a hassle and if I say lose a blade and need to power up one of my node guests somewhere else I'd like to do so without down time and hassle.  Is this possible?

I know vMotion is not supported with physical bus sharing, but does this prohibition extend to cold (powered-off) migration as well?  Or is this an indication that I've flubbed my setup?

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

esxi 5.1 U2 not saving configuration

$

All,

I have a system where I installed esxi 5.1 Update 2 on a single SATA drive.  The install went great, rebooted, brought up the system, logged in using the password I had provided during the install.

I then changed the IP address, DNS servers, etc and saved them,

I also enabled the shell and added the following commands

    esxcfg-advcfg -k TRUE skipmicrocodecompatcheck

also ran

    /sbin/auto-backup.sh 0 /bootdisk

reboot and now my password is gone, the IP configs are gone and the skipmicrocodecompatcheck is also gone.

It seems that no matter what I put in the configs are not being saved.   I have swapped to another drive, same result.

Any ideas on this one?

VMware Tools 9.4.6 - Customization Issues

$

Recently upgraded our Windows 2008 R2 template to the latest tools (v.9.4.6 - 1770165). After upgrading, I couldn't get any guest customizations to run when deploying VMs from that template - they'd all show an error in the VM events log "An error occurred while customizing VM vm name. For details reference the log file <No Log> in the guest OS."

Uninstalled tools (v.9.4.6) on the template and installed v.9.4.5 - everything started working again, customizations working properly.

Anyone else experience this with the latest tools?

VM partly seems to Freeze / not fully responsive

$

I have a single ESXI 5.5 host. On this host, I have (3) VMs. (2) are on DAS, and (1) (the problem) is attached via an iSCSI volume.

This third VM is on an iSCSI volume. It's a management server running Windows Server 2012. It has a small sharepoint install, Symantec Endpoint Protection, and VEEAM.

Quite frequently, when you try to RDP to this box, it fails. It responds to a ping, and if you open the VMWARE console, you can see the Windows 2012 screen and the clock is ticking on it. BUt when you try to send CTL-ALT-DEL to the box, nothing happens. It responds to a ping, but none of the shares respond. None of the services on it seems to be working. It's as if it's frozen, but the clock ticks on and on when you are in the console as if it's operational. But it's not.

I have to power off / on just about every day now. There's nothing in the W2012 Event logs that indicates any problems. THe time stamping on the System logs just stop after a certain time. Like I said, it appears to be frozen, except for the strangeness of ping replies and the clock ticking on the console screen.

I really need help troubleshooting this. I'm about ot put in a VMWARE scheduled task to reset it every morning. And while this would be better, it's not a solution. I'd rather try to figure out why it's doing what it's doing.

I'm an average admin on VMWARE, and would not consider myself an expert in issues like this, frankly because I've never experienced this. This VM has been this way since I built it.

Where do I go to set or look at logs to try and figure out why it's not responding? How can I put in an alarm to let me know when it's locked up / frozen so at least I could manually reset it if I had to. But I'd rather root cause it and fix it, but just don't know what else to do. Like I said, the VM's system logs are clean, but they just stop as if it's frozen in time. The VMHOST thinks the VM is running.

I could really use some help.

Hello I was hoping to use ESXi 5's 3d graphics, specifically directx 9 video games, is this where sVGA comes into play?

If so I was wondering if a r9 280x 6gb video card would work with ESXi's sVGA 3d graphics?

Hello,

I have added a usb 3 controller in the pci-e slot and it is not showing in the list of available device to enable for passthrough

I have seen on other thread that this chipset is supposed to be supported for passthrough in esxi !

Does anybody have a suggestion to make it appear in the list ?

can i use vmware essential kit (RBO) in my one datacenter?

RBO ( retail branch office).

this kit comes with min 10 sites and 3 hosts in one site.

can any one comment on it. is it a good idea to buy essential kit instead of buying separate enterprise license.

If i have around 100 CPUs on my hosts, then i have to buy  3 sites only.

for virtual center i can buy separate standard license.

What are the difference between RBO kit and enterprise license ?

Is this workable?
