Another RAID Question :)

$

0

So we recently purchased our licenses for ESXi 5 and before I order my raid controller I would like to check with the community on a few things.

Based on some research I've done on the forums and on the compatibility list this is a fairly decent controller:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118170

What we're looking to do is take the above 8 port controller, and set up 4 drives in RAID 10. Then down the line, hook up an additional 4 drives to the same controller in either another raid 10 setup, or two RAID 1 arrays.

So my question is this: Is it possible to install ESXi 5.5 on the first RAID 10 setup, then later on, create additional arrays on the same controller and then allocate them to the existing ESXi installation?

Thanks in advance for the responses!

Installing Web Services SDK for ESXi5.5

I am trying to learn/use the Web Services SDK, but have quite a learning curve ahead of me.  I want to use this for ESXi configuration for developing automaton to test our adapters.

Anyway, while I have found a lot of documentation, none of it is answering a basic question (at least for me).  Where do I install the SDK?  It appears that I need it on the workstation that will run the automation tests.  However, does it also need to be installed on the ESXi5.5 host?  Are the web APIs already on the ESXi host?   The documentation uses example like this

https://your_host_ip/sdk , but that does not exist.  Hence my question as to whether or not I need to install it on the host.

Thanks for any help.

ESXi 5.1 - Safest Way To Shutdown A Blade

What is the Safest Way to Shutdown a Blade for Maintenance?

I know that I need to Migrate all VM's from the Blade that is to be shutdown prior to shutting down the Blade.

Next week, I need to shut down (one at a time) all three (3) of my Dell M620 Blades (Dell VRTX) for adding more physical RAM.

Thanks in Advance.

esx linkstate down

I have two identical hosts:

AMD 8350 eight core

Asrock 990FX Extreme 3

32 GB RAM

2-Intel 82571EB Dual Gigabit NICS

2-2TB Seagate Hard Drives

Hosts ESXi 5.5.0.2068190

vSphere with Operations Manager

vCenter Server 5.5.0.2001466

Since the latest update one of the hosts keep getting a esx linkstate down error.  A red exclamation appears on the host in vCenter Client and connection to vCenter Server stops and Operations Manager shows a red badge in operations manager.  All VM's on the host appear to be running and have green arrows showing so.  I can ping all the VM's on the internal network connection. The external/internet connected NIC is no longer reachable.  This never occurs on the second, identical host.  This is very strange behavior because the hosts are connected to vCenter Server via the internal network.  Anyone have any advice on how to figure this out?

Thanks,

mux

Manually reset the VMID values

$

I am using ESXi 5.5.0 update 1, but this is relevant in general to all versions of ESXi.  My question is, how can you reset the VMID value for a VM or reset the counter so that new VMs will start over at a lower number?  When you run:

[root@esxcore01]:~-> vim-cmd vmsvc/getallvms

You get a list of VMs on the host and they all have a VMID associated with them.  Usually starting at 1 and counting up.  Every time you delete a VM and recreate it, it will just take the next value in the list.  In my case where I spin up a lot of VMs for a short period of time and then delete them when I am done, the VMID numbers can easily get up in the hundreds or thousands very quickly.  What I would like to do, without doing a CD re-install of the host, is reset the VMID table.  The steps I would like to follow is something like:

1) Delete all VMs on the host or un-register all VMs on the host.

2) Edit the right configuration file to reset the counter

3) Create a new VM or re-register a VM and have it start back at VMID 1.

Has anyone figured out which configuration files need to be edited to make this happen?

What I have found is:  [root@esxcore01]: /etc/vmware/hostd/vmInventory.xml contains a list of all of the registered VMs on the host, but it calls VMID <objID>.  The <objID> is also found in: [root@esxcore01]: /etc/vmware/hostd/pools.xml

I can not find any other reference to that in the system configuration.  So unless there is a database file that has that in there, I am not sure where else to look. Is there a command that can reset the value?

Local Esxi User Privilege

Hi,

We have issue with disk alignment. Our datastores are on NetApp. I created a local user on ESXi host and want to give the following permissions so user can :

1) SSH to ESXi Host

2) Run mbrtool to align the disk on the VMs.

I do not want to give administrator privileges to the user. So far I gave Virtual Machine - > Provisioning -> Allow Disk Access. I'm not if this is sufficient to run the mbralign tool and also I don't how to give SSH access to the local ESXi user.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

CPU Configuration and load issues on Mac Mini

$

I have typically always used a quad core mac mini for my ESXI machine, but in this one particular case, I used a dual-core 2.53GHz with 8GB or RAM. With these specs, I thought it would be wise to only install two VM on this machine, versus the typical 4 that I do on the i7 Mac Minis.

The issue that I am having on the 2.53 i5 machine is that one of the two VMs don't seem to by utilizing the CPU to it's fullest potential when needed, and at times, only consumes about 1-1.5GHz of the CPU when I believe it should be allocating double that. The result is a slow VM at times.

I am running ESXI 5.5 on the machine, and for both of the VMs on it, have configured them to have 1 Virtual Socket and 2 Virtual Cores for the CPU. Is there something I am missing?

4 core CPU but 10 cores assigned - performance hit?

$

ESXi 5.1 latest update, 4-core i5 3Ghz CPU, 32GB memory, 512GB SSD

I've got 5 VM's each with 2 cores assigned to them. The Exch2013 and Dev (published apps) VM's are regularly in use during the day. The other VM's (DC, web/ftp server, Win7) also get used but less frequently. Truthfully, I'm surprised that all the VM's run extremely fast even under very heavy load. I've been logged in remotely running Windows Updates on all 5 VM's simultaneously, pinning the CPU usage bar in vSphere Client, and yet all the VM's remain very responsive to other tasks I launch.

I'm just curious how VMware is able to keep all the VM's happy with such a core over-provisioning. Is there a performance metric I can look at to see when the CPU is getting 'tied up' because I've got too many vCPU's assigned? I think I read an article once about how VMware shares some processes between VM's for efficiency. Is this true?

TIA!

Centos7 guest looses incoming network access

I am using ESXi, 5.5.0, 1746018 and with either a e1000e or vmxnet3 nic, after a reboot within a minute or two incoming network access is lost for a guest.
These are new minimal console only guests just created, with or without tools installed.

Anyone seen this before?

Thanks.

Cannot disable passthrough on ESXi 5.1 update 1 server

Hi,

I have an IBM X3400 M3 server with a MegaRAID SAS Controller.

As an experiment I tried to enable passthrough on the controller and then I wanted to disable it again - but I am stuck!

I can disable passthrough with the vsphere client - but after the mandatory reboot passthrough is enabled again :-(

I can shell my way to the server and VI /etc/vmware/esx.conf and change the owner from "passthru" to "vmkernel" -

(as suggested in knowledge base article: 1022011)

but again after the mandatory reboot - ownership of the controller is back to passthrough.

I have attached a few screenshoots of the misery - any advice would be most welcome

What happens in term of performance if I didn't install VMware tools on linux with NIC defined as VXNET3

$

Hi Experts,

I would like to understand the following:

currently I have a server with 10G interfaces (ESXi 5.5 u1), and I have installed SUSE linux as a virtual machine with VXNET3 NIC adapter, but I don't want to install VMware tools. According to the below article, VMtools are needed for VXNET3

VMware KB: Choosing a network adapter for your virtual machine

So my question is: what will happen to the network performance on this machine? (I have seen that it basically works but not sure of the performance).

Another question: in case we have a virtual machine but we don't want to install VMtools on it, what is the recommended NIC adaptor for this virtual machine?

Thanks,

VpxClient has stopped working

I have recently received a Windows 7 64-bit lenovo laptop for a new job. It has all of the latest Windows updates installed (including .NET 4)

I installed the vSphere client (first 4.1, then 5.0) seemingly without issue. When I attempt to launch the client (either version) I immediately get a Windows notification that "VpxClient has stopped working" and I can either check online for a solution or close the program. Either way I cannot go any further.

Checking in the vpx log files I find these entries:

no coredump target warnig on 1 server

I have 3 ESXi 5.5 server with an enterprise license. Not using host templates, server boots from a SD card. All datastores accessed via iSCSI.

2 servers show no errors in the VMware client, one does in the summary screen.

The warning is: Configuration issues, No coredump target has been configured. Host coredumps cannot be saved.

On all 3 I have the same (disabled) configuration:

~ # esxcli system coredump network get

   Enabled: false

   Host VNic:

   Network Server IP:

   Network Server Port: 0

I do not want to configure a coredump location, it is disabled and that is what I want.

So why am I getting a warning on 1 server and not on the others?

Will a reboot of the ESXi server solve this? Probably not but just in case... ;-)

Identifying a VMDK which is not in use

Hi There,

I've recently created/add an additional disk within a VM for certain test and removed it afterwards. While, removing I accidentally clicked on remove disk without deleting it from the directory where the corresponding  VM is in. What my question is that, I don't understand which one is the exact .vmdk which I recently created in order to remove. Even the changed/modified dates shows up on the disks which are similar. Any advise on how to check and delete the disk which is not connected to that respective VM?

Thank you in advance.
