Issue migrating to vDS

$

Hi All,

I have an Esxi 5.5 server (HP Proliant). It has 2 physical NICs. One of which is used by the host and VMs.

I want to migrate the host to a distributed switch, but get this error (IP is not mine, error is same):

“Network configuration change disconnected the host ’172.19.248.14′ from vCenter server and has been rolled back.

fault.NetworkDisruptedAndConfigRolledBack.summary”

when the switch NIC is access mode

This is in the comments of  http://www.virtuallanger.com/2012/09/08/migrating-portgroups-from-a-vss-to-a-vds/

The same person says:

vmk0′s IP has to reside on the default VLAN of the physical network port.

So either set the native VLAN on the physical switch side, or change the IP of vmk0 to reside on the default VLAN.

What would I need to do exactly?

How to assign multiple public IPs to multiple VMs

$

ISP has provided a pool from 16 IPs addresses for my needs. At this point I have a problem with ESXi. I need to properly forward a traffic for each of the VM under ESXi, i.e. assign each VM its own external IP. There is a similar article, which seems resolution of this problem, but it looks very difficult as for such modern and powerful platform like ESXi. Especially if the IP, which is allocated on the same subnet, and gateway (as usual it's ESXi) are in totally different subnets. Please tell me how to customize that in ESXi to perform this with minimal intervention into guest OS network settings as it's implemented in e.g. Hyper-V.

Thank you.

MegaCli for LSI MegaRaid 9240-8i on ESXi 5.0

I have set up an ESXi 5.0 machine with an LSI MegaRaid 9240-8i controller. The controller works fine and I was able to load the SMIS provider such that the controller displays properly in the health status. But I really want to be able to use the MegaCli command line tool. I have loaded the MegaCli executible but when I run it it fails asking for libstorelib.so. Does anyone know what I need to load to make it available? I have searched all through both LSI and Vmware sites and am not finding anything.

Thanks,

Cameron

VMware ESXi 5.5 U2 - TcpAckFrequency

Looks like there is a bug in VMware ESXi.

Exchange 2013 SP1 on win2k12 r2 on a physical server: no slow upload issue with Outlook.

Exchange 2013 SP1 on win2k12 r2 on VMware ESXi 5.5 U2: has slow upload issue with Outlook.

-tried E100E & VMXNET3 network adapters, doesn't fix the issue.

-only way to fix the slow upload issue is to modify the registry key TcpAckFrequency on the PC

How do I fix this in ESXi without modifying TcpAckFrequency in the registry on the PC?

Thanks

Is ICH10 passthrough still broken in ESXi 5.5 Update 1?

One of the reasons why I've never upgraded to 5.5 is because ICH10 passthrough was broken. Has that been fixed in Update 1, or is it still an issue?

High Availability Question

Hello,

I am new to this forum and slightly new to VMWare. I've dealt with ESXi plenty at my old job, but usually in a single host or two host max with no fail over. At my new job we are looking at doing a major ERP upgrade and are wanting to look at VMWare fail over. I want to be able to buy two of the exact same over to accomplish this. I'm just wanting to verify that there is a way to accomplish this. We have High Availibility setup on our current servers, but it's for the host server only. There is no redundant storage, both machines are hooked into the same SAN so if the storage goes down our fail over is worthless.

Hi

I am currently experimenting with ESXI 5. I use backup exec to backup my servers and i am trying to open a converted backup by backup exec. I can see the backup of the server saved on my esxi server and it has created .vmdk files, But i am unsure how to open these and run them in esxi. Can anyone help?

Thanks

DirectPath I/O support for Haswell Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller

$

Hi,

Im building a new ESXi 5.5 system on Asus H87i-itx board with Intel i5 Haswell 4670T chip. Mainboard and CPU both support VT-d / DirectPath I/O so far as I can tell, but I have a problem.

In ESXi I can see most devices available for DirectPath I/O passthrough such as Video, Audio, NIC and USB controller, everything is available for DirectPath I/O passthrough except for Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller.

Can anybody help diagnose why the SATA controller is missing, and steps for more detailed debugging ?

Previous Cougar Point AHCI SATA controller is supported in ESXi so why not Lynx Point.

Also, Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller is listed on VMware HCL page here:

VMware Compatibility Guide: I/O Device Search   Intel "Lynx Point" Series Chipset 6-Port SATA AHCI  8086:8c02

Strange thing is my ESXi can see the Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller in Storage Adaptors correctly, showing 6 x VMHBA listed, so why does it not appear in passthrough, and not even greyed out ?

Is there any extra diagnostic I can do please tell me ?

Would like to avoid doing physical raw mapping (rdm) if possible, DirectPath I/O Passthrough would be much nicer method. :-)

CPU LATENCY Counter ON ESXI 5.0.

$

I am having trouble understanding
the results from the latency counter on the vcentre for our guest VM.

My understanding of the latency counter
is that it will increase when there is contention for physical CPU resources
and that it is a measurement of percentage of time that a guest has to wait to
get access to the CPU resource.  However,
all our hosts have more CPU physical cores than the total number of VCPU’s of
our guests.  Therefore, if my
understanding is correct, there should be minimal latency and there should be
no contention for physical CPU resources.
We are seeing a number of guest VM wares with a latency of above 10%
which I have read shows significant degradation of performance.

However, our CPU Ready counter
are well below 500 milliseconds.  Can
anyone shed any light as to why this might be the case?

Running ESXi 5.1 and want to upgrade to 5.5

I've been running for about a year with no problems but when I did the installation I had to re-create the ISO to include the Ethernet driver to work. Will migrating to 5.5 break the Ethernet connection again or keep it after the upgrade is done? I'm only using this so I can run a few operating systems and really didn't need a full blown server, that's why I'm using the Dell Optiplex 790. The 790 comes with:

ESXI 5..5 (MacMini version) installation and harddrive recognition issue

I am trying to install ESXI 5.5 on MacBook Pro 5.3 ... Installation process gets stuck when it gets to disk recognition - show none for both local and remote. Does it mean that MacBookPro is incompatible with 5.5 ? Missing drivers ?

Is there a way around this limitation ?

Thx in advance, W

Makes sense to keep a spare USB boot drive plugged in?

I presently use 16GB USB thumb drives on my (4) ESXi hosts.  I am wondering if it makes sense to have a second USB drive attached, in the event of a failure on the primary.  Does anyone else do this?  When I do server maintenance, it's usually always in the evening via remote access.  If I had a USB drive go down, that would be when I'd discover it.  A second USB would give me something as a fall back.  Just wondering what the consensus is on this.

I can't join the host (VCSA 5.5.0 U2a) to domain. I get the message:

What can I try?

cfdisk / parted larger disks than provisioned

Hi,

I've generated and deployed an OVA via ovftool (running CentOS 6.2 on a ESXi 5.1).

The VMs used to generate the OVA and to deploy it were both provisioned as 32GB.

However, Linux ('cfdisk', 'parted /dev/sda unit GB print free' etc.) indicates that the disk size is 34GB.

Trying a 64GB VM, such tools report 68GB.

Is it normal to expect a ~ 2GB larger disk per 32GB of provisioned size?  If so, why?

Thanks.
