Why does upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 change MAC addresses in guests?

$

Out of curiosity, why does upgrading from ESXi 5.0 to 5.1 cause the virtual adapter in Linux guests to change MAC addresses?

Before and after, Vmware reports it's an E1000 adapter being presented to the OS.

SLES 11 SP1 (and SP2) 64-bit I've seen this on so far.

Not sure about SLES10 SP3/SP4

Processor Cores Died / Disappeared?

I had a PSU die in one of my ESXi hosts last night. Swapped the PSU and everything came online. Weirdest thing is thta this is a Quad core processor and it suddenly shows only 3 cores. What...the...hell. Anyone seen this? I haven't had the opportunity to check out the BIOS as the system is up and running...but I'm just laughing at this for now. Maybe the BIOS was reset, but shutting down cores doesn't make sense.

oh and also from SSH to host directly(after enabling of course)

Has Anyone Virtualized Coins??

$

Hi,

Has anyone virtualized Coins (HR/Payroll) onto an ESXi 5 host using VMs running Red Hat??

For those not familiar with Coins, it uses a ProgressDB and normally a Unix host.

We've been advised by Coins not to do this based on our user count, 300 Coins users - but the hardware/vms we were spec'ing were capable of double that.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Using VMWare-Mount on to mount snapshot VMDK on another PC

Hi

I'm using vmware-mount (v5.0) to try and mount a snaphot of a VM linux server that is having issues, and I need to explore the snapshot to get some data from it.

I have copied the VMDK file I want to mount from ESXi using the datastore browser to a local Win 7 PC and it is on here that I am trying to mount the file.

However when I run this:

vmware-mount z: C:\Users\<user>\Desktop\test-db-v01-flat.vmdk /m:n

I get this??

Unable to mount the virtual disk. The disk may be in use by a virtual

machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive

letter. If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file.

This is despite the fact that this is being mounted on a PC that is not an ESXi host, so would have no way of knowing whether the VM linux server at present (which it isn't since it's screwed..)

The linux server would have been running at the time of the snapshot been taken though if this makes any difference.

Any ideas why this is happening and how I may get around this issue?

TIA

Will disconnecting and reconnecting the Host change scheduled Tasks

$

If disconnecting the server is a mandatory step, then is there anyway to preserve the scheduled tasks associated with the ESXi hosts?

I have multiple scheduled clone tasks that I use for backups - removing the ESXi host will also delete any task associated with it.

Upgrading ML350 G6 to ESXi 5.1 and seeing 'Warning' on Smart Array p410i controller.

I always have my installs on external USB thumb drives, just in case the install fails and I need to get the system back up ASAP. Anyways, I popped in a fresh USB thumb drive, installed 5.1 and everything went smoothly (as it always has for the last ~9 versions). But this time, I'm seeing a "Warning" on my Smart Array Controller. I am using the HP Customized Image. I believe I read somewhere that there is a bug with the latest HP customized image and that the warning is superficial. Any suggestions?

ESXi 5.0 wwwn's are changed

I have installed ESXi 5.0 on an IBM Blade HS 21 XM (type 7995) using the boot on SAn option. The boot disk (size 3 GB)for the ESXi 5.0 I have created on IBM disk system DS 3400 with fiber channel conectivity. the installation went OK

After I have created the vCenter Server5 using another array on the IBM DS 3400and I have added the host to the datacenter the ESXi 5.0 appears with a warnig sign (as in the attachement)

I have installed ESXi 4.1 on another IBM HS 21 XM with boot on SAN (the same DS 3400) but I have no warnig at all and it is working for more than 1 year. Boteh Blade's servers IBM HS21 XM are on the same IBM BladeCenter H sharing the same IBM DS 3400

When I connect to the ESXi 5.0 host directly with the VSphere Client I have no warning sign.

Can I use this host in production enviroment?

I have made the third installation using this time a 15 GB disk on  IBM DS 3400 thinking that the others are small (I used 3 and 5 GB disks) I have the same error

ESXi 5.0 - Clear SEL without vCenter

Hi there,

I keep getting warning messages with CIM as below. And this is a problem because we use a python script for hardware monitoring.

     WARNING : IPMI SEL - Server: HP ProLiant ML350p Gen8 s/n:...

I know there is a ton of posts on clearning these using vCenter but cannot find how to do it using the CLI or the vSphere client. I believe it's something to do with either /var/log/ipmi/0/sel and/or /var/log/ipmi/0/sel.raw. Both of these are only about 3k in size though.

Can someone please let me know how to do this to prevent the error coming up?

Thanks for any help.

Migration Path from 3.5 to 5.0

$

We have two hosts running esx 3.5 with vCenter 3.5 and we want to migrate to vCenter 5.0 with two brand new 5.0 ESX hosts.

What is the correct migration path to make this work?

Is it possible to have ESX 3.5 hosts and ESX 5 hosts both access the same LUNs if they are on totally different installs/datacenter?

Thanks

vSphere Client for Server 2012

I have installed Windows Server 2012 on my laptop and tried to install the vSphere client (VMware-viclient-all-5.0.0-623373) but it comes up with "This product can only be installed on Windows XP SP2 and above".

Is there a way to get around this, or is there a newer version of the client I can download that will work?

Cheers.

VMFS Issue, FB Inconsistecy found, (xxx, xxx) allocated in bitmap but never used

So we had a storm last night, and a server with ESXi 5.1 and local (LSI RAID Array) went down in a less than clean manner due to an UPS issue.  All the VMs on the machines look OK, ran some chkdsks on them, just a few misallocated free space corrections made in the NTFS guest filesystem.  This got me curious, and after a little digging, I found out about the voma tool... so I ran a check on the VMFS volume... and got tons (217,588 to be exact) of these errors (with the numbers in parentheses changed, but often in sequential blocks)

ON-DISK ERROR: FB inconsistency found: (321,70) allocated in bitmap, but never used
ON-DISK ERROR: FB inconsistency found: (321,71) allocated in bitmap, but never used

Is there a tool that can resolve these inconsistencies?  This system does not have support on it.

vSphere Web Client and Mac OS X

Hmm... with the release of 5.1, they seem to be encouraging everybody to move to the web client.  But it seems that Mac OS X is still not supported.  What's the plan to support Mac OS X?  I really don't want to have to run a VM (in Fusion) to manage my environment....
