ESXi 5.5 - power outage during snapshot deletion

Hello everybody:)

We have a ESXI5.5 server running 1 VM - SBS2011 with Exchange 2010 ( it is a mail server) with a 500GB thin provisioned disk.

It had 7 snapshots, where the last was about 150GB large. Due to a communication error, the snapshots was not deleted when server changes was done and tested ok, and the snapshot was allowed to grow in size.

When deleting snapshots on a running VM,  we had a power outage that lasted long enough so our UPS shut down. After that things went haywire, and we started getting problems.

The VM would not boot, and the snapshot manager showed no snapshots. After looking throug forums i tried the tip to create a snapshot, delete it and reboot. It worked, and everything looked ok. We could access all mail and OWA and Outlook Clients connected. But after 2 days, the server stopped responding, CPU performance shows no activity and we had to reboot.

Rebooted and the server went into system recovery state. The backup was crippled due to an error on the NAS that had not been detected the last 1 month, no error messages and server backup reported successful backups (run twice a day).

Well, reinstalled server, mounted the 500GB vmdisk to retreive the exchange .edb-file so we could import mailboxes, but then we got a surprise. The first snapshot was taken March this year and to our surprise, the .edb-file which had been written on the same day the server crashed, just showed email and accounts created before the snapshot.

Now we have 7 snapshot files we get an error when trying to copy or mount.

Is there a way to retreive data from the snapshots or merge them with the 500GB disk?

Best regards

Morty

OS X Fusion 7.1.1 connecting to vSphere 5.5 remote device (USB) passthrough BROKEN (and FIXED)

When using OS X Fusion 7.1.1 connecting to vSphere 5.5 I'm always using the passthrough of USB devices from my machine to the remote host.

Fusion 7.1.1 BROKE this completely and it wouldn't work until I installed version 7.1.0 over the top. Running Fusion 7.1.0 fixes is.

PowerCLI and VM errors\warnings

Hi All,

First time poster here..

I have an issue at the moment, due to disk IOPS latency, where snapshots are not consolidating.  I want to create a PowerCLI script that I can run on my VC and pull back any VMs that have warnings or errors.  I have had a look on the web but cannot see anything out there at the moment, but then again, maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks

Pete

No network for 3rd/4th VM created

Hi All.

we have a single host that we are using as our demo server in our office, keeping it separate from the datacenter.

Came across an issue where once I create a 3rd or 4th VM, that VM is unable to communicate outside of the port group. I had an issue similar to this about 6 months or so ago where it was the 5th VM.

Our testing of this is a VM port group tagged with a VLAN, this then connects back to another VLAN out at our Datacenter with several VMs running on it. There are 4 VMs on this single host, the first 2 VMs (In order of creation) are able to ping. tracert, UNC, etc to the VMs in the other datacenter, the 3rd/4th VM is only able to do the do those with the VMs in that same port group.

On that vSwitch is a VMKernal which we are able to ping to and from. There is another vSwitch which is purely for Management on our office VLAN.

Currently I have deleted trouble VM from disk, rebuilt, deleted the vSwitch and created a new one and this is continuing to happen. I have gone through with a fine tooth comb, written down IPs and changed them around. We have ruled out the switch with any MAC address restrictions, etc.

Has anyone come across this before? What other information do you require?

Thank you.

Hello,

our Update Manager displays a strange alert in the settings of network connectivity.

Firewall Rules regarding client communication are configured well in vCenter Server Operating System (Windows Server 2008 R2).

What can I do to make this red alert disappear?

(see screenshot below)

Is this possible with vsphere 5.1 or 5.5 spanport? I need to log all traffic from the physical switch uplinks as well as all vms from both esxi hosts to a single vm destination

any idea how to do this?

Convert SQL server physical cluster (2 nodes) into VMs

System: ESXi 5.1

My system (Production System) includes ESXI 5.1 coupled with a Windows Server 2008 R2 physical Cluster with SQL Server 2008 R2 (2 instances Active - Active).

The cluster is Physical server 2 nodes.

Now the task is create a <test> environment replicating the production environment an other ESXi system (test environment) by importing the VMs. Here the problem:

I need to import the physical cluster as VMs.

QUESTION:

Is it possible to convert a Physical cluster (2 nodes) into a Virtualized Cluster (2 VMs as nodes)?

I am thinking a possible way: using the vCenter converter:

1) Cluster Down --> vCenter Converter to convert the 2 nodes into VM. May be feasable? The only problem is to create correctly the shared disks (in production resides in a dedicated SAN different from the Test storage).

Please, any advise will be very useful.

Thanks

Storage Sensor for LSI 9260-8i in ESX 5.5

Hi All,

I recently purchased a new RAID controller for my ESXi 5.5u2 host. I chose the LSI 9260-8i due to the positive reviews, price, and 5.5 compatibility. The main goal of the new RAID controller was to add visibility of the array within ESXi "Hardware Status" and to allow management from a VM via MegaRAID Storage Manager. I flashed the 9260 with the latest firmware then installed 5.5u2. The LSI RAID controller was found and both my disk units are available and function as expected.

Unfortunately, I still do not have a Storage Sensor in the Hardware Status tab. I have tried installed both the Legacy and Native drivers as well as the latest SMIS, all found HERE. I had success updating the Legacy driver but SMIS would not update.

Please respond if you have an LSI 9260 with ESXi 5.5. I'm curious in the Storage Sensor is visible for you.

THANK YOU!

VMware Tools "Not running"

$

We have a VM running Win10 Enterprise (vSphere 5.5) which VMware Tools often switches between "Not running (Current)" and "Running (Current)".  I'm guessing that whatever is causing this issue is also causing users to not be able to RDP into the VM and also causing errors when running a nightly backup.

Thanks

After minimizing console window, can't restore it. vSphere 5.5

This seems to be an ongoing problem with the vsphere client (not the web client). I have seen it on each of the computers I have used the vsphere client on over the past few years. The problem in that after opening a console window to a VM, if I minimize that console window and then try to unminimize it to get back to it, it usually stays hidden. The only way I can get back to it is to close the console window and then click "open console" again. Not a big deal but it is a little frustrating. Does anyone know a fix for this or is vmware planning to release a fix?

Thanks

Huge memory leak problem on application on RHEL 5.11 guest OS on VMware ESXi 5.5

Hi,

We have a critical problem on our product behavior on VMware. Our product can be deployed RHEL 5.11 on Red Hat-KVM and VMware ESXi 5.5. The product includes kernel module and the module uses more Linux SLAB memory(14GB of 16GB) in second model.

We generated vmcore and ran it with debug enabled kernel. We found something but not find issues; the module frees memory after jobs are finished. We are working reproduce the problem on Red Hat-KVM. But system engineering team says the problem was not seen on guest on Red Hat-KVM.

Is that a VMware specific problem? Is that make sense?

Performance Issues - Soliciting Ideas

$

Looking for ideas to further troubleshoot some performance issues.  Symptoms are encountered when transferring large quantities of data over a 1Gbps LAN to all but 1 of the Guest VMs.  Symptoms are as follows:

The issue seems to occur only when sending data to certain guest VMs.  Reading of data performs as expected..   When sending large amounts of data (gigs) via Samba, iSCSI, FTP, SCP, etc the transfer starts at near wire speed (900+ MBps) then drops off, sometimes coming to a complete halt for many seconds.  I've tried a number of Guest VM operating systems, including BSD 9.3, Fedora 22, Ubuntu 14.    All encounter the same issue.   vSphere is showing "naa device I/O deterioration" messages.

Note that one of the VMs is running Fedora 22.  I can send enormous quantities of data to the Samba share and the performance is good.  The transfer rate will dip from time to time, but largely remains at wire speed (1Gbps).

Compute Specs

---------------------

DL380 G6

CPU: 2x XEON L5520 2.27 Processors (8 cores total)

Storage: 8 x 146GB SAS 3G  10k RPM all in 1 RAID 5 Array

Memory: 36GB of DDR 1333Mhz, using all channels (2GB x 18 slots)

RAID Controller: p410i

VMWare Configuration

------------------------------

ESXi 5.5. with Update 3 installed

3 VMs total:

1 - Fedora 22 with 220GB of HD space, 12GB or RAM, and has access to all 8 CPUs  (THIS ONE SEEMS TO HAVE NO PERFORMANCE ISSUES)

2 - Fedora 22 with 100GB or HD space, 8GB of RAM, and has access to all 8 CPUs

3 - Ubuntu 14 with 355GB of HD space, 12GB of RAM, and has access to 4 CPUs

The CPU is oversubscribed, but the guest VMs are basically idle.  There's no production anything going on in the environment.  I've tried the following:

1. Update all ROM, ILO, and array controller firmware to current

2. Set "write cache" to enable

3. Various versions of VMTools, including openvmtools, and the VMTools offered by VMWare

4. Tried different SCSI controllers (the good VM is using LSI SCSI SAS)

I've read a ton of articles - nothing seems to help.   Not sure what to try next.

ESX 5.5U1 unable to snapshot

$

I have a weird question. I have a cluster setup up in vSphere 5.5 U1 that uses EMC's VPlex technology, and SRM for DR purposes. When I connect to my Vcenter server, the "take snapshot" option is grayed out. I also cannot power the server on if it is off. If I connect directly to the host server (ESXi 5.5 U1) I can take a snapshot and power on the server. Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to do it when I am connected to Vcenter? I've searched and haven't found anything applicable and tech support seems to be stumped.

Hello,

I have two ESXi Hosts with around about 700 applicable patches.

What is the difference between "Stage Patches" und "Scan for Updates" ?

Do I need maintenance mode to stage patches?
