Unable To Select VMXNET3 As Adapter

$

A little backstory - running ESX 5.5, virtual machine is VyOS (which is running a flavor of Debian).  We are adding a 10Gig NIC to the host and would like to take advantage of the faster speeds on the VMs.  VyOS is currently using the E1000 adapter, and the adapter dropdown inside of the add adapter wizard only lists E1000 (and no VMXNET3).

Capture.JPG

Strangely, creating a new VyOS VM from scratch (using the same install ISO), I'm able to select between E1000 and VMXNET3 from the initial add VM wizard, and this new VM recognizes the VMXNET3 adapter (and 10Gig speeds).  I'd rather not have to migrate to this new VM - how can I add the VMXNET3 adapter to the existing VyOS VM?

2008 R2 VM's BSOD - IMAGE_NAME: vsepflt.sys

vCenter Version: 6.0.0 2776511

ESXi Build: 5.5.0 3343343

We have migrated some VM's to a new cluster that is protected by Trend Micro Deep Security (Version 9.6.3177).

NSX File introspection is installed.

Our 2008 R2 VM's are BSOD'ing all over the place. The crash dump segment shows the below...

SYMBOL_STACK_INDEX:  6

SYMBOL_NAME:  vsepflt+cc8c

FOLLOWUP_NAME:  MachineOwner

MODULE_NAME: vsepflt

IMAGE_NAME:  vsepflt.sys

DEBUG_FLR_IMAGE_TIMESTAMP:  55b60757

STACK_COMMAND:  .cxr 0xfffff88005565c50 ; kb

FAILURE_BUCKET_ID:  X64_0x24_vsepflt+cc8c

BUCKET_ID:  X64_0x24_vsepflt+cc8c

Followup: MachineOwner

Note the file "vsepflt.sys" seems to be the cause. It's the vShield End Point Filter Driver.

Has anyone run into this and have you fixed it?

This article shows how to unload and stop the driver from loading...

VMware KB: Windows 2008 R2 fails with a blue diagnostic screen when the installed antivirus software includes the vS…

Trend Micro Deep Security (Version 9.6.3177) needs that to protect the VM's so that's really not a fix.

I also uninstalled the VMware Tools and re-installed them. No change.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

ESXi 5.5 virtualizing Windows Server 2012 R2 w/AD DS

$

Hello everyone,

I am working on a research project at the moment.  I am attempting to setup Active Directory to authenticate ESXi 5.5 users.

Our environment is as follows:

Private Switch <--Firewall Server -->WWW<-- VPN <-- vSphere Client <-- ESXi user / admins

Below are the servers in the private network connected to the private switch:

-ESXi 5.5 Update2physical host (We will host virtualized system services here)

-We have 4 ESXi admin accounts

    VMs:

    -Monitoring Server

    -Workstation

-Windows Server 2012 R2 [Active Directory service]

The following are 3 ESXi physical host machines

-Each have 3 admin accounts

-ESXi 5.5 Update2 physical host- 3 users to be authenticated by Active Directory

-ESXi 5.5Update2physical host- 3 users to be authenticated by Active Directory

-ESXi 5.5Update2physical host- 3 users to be authenticated by Active Directory

Each user is able to create their own VMs within their assigned ESXi host.

I have already began to set this up, but I would hate to hit a dead-end that someone may have some insight about.

I have searched for Windows Server 2012 R2 virtualized installation examples, but have only found migration examples (already running physical AD DS to virtual).  Does anyone know of any guides I can follow to set this up from scratch? Or have any first-hand account input for my situation? I know there are specific settings I must have when creating the VM in order for AD DS to work properly.  I have followed those from Windows Server 2012 Best Practices.  I am putting this out so I can maybe get some feedback from those who have already tackled something very similar to this.

Any input is welcome.  Thank you in advance.

Network restore, auto-confguring network failed.

Hello, I have a problem.

Server was moved from one network to another. There used to be manual configuration, and was moved to network with DHCP - but that is not a point.

The problem is that I could not get IP addres , and decided to Restore Network Settings.

Result was:

Powering Off VMs. Done.

Auto-configuring network. Failed.

After that I have no access to Network Configuraion etc. I do not know what to do now.

vMotion failing on 55

We recently upgrade our hosts from 5.1 to 5.5 and we are no facing intermittent vmotion issues.

vmotion between 5.1 is fine, vmotion between 5.5 is fine but some (not all) vms fail to vmotion from the 5.1 to the 5.5 hosts.

The error is failed with error Connection closed by remote host, possibly due to timeout (0xbad003f.), if I downgrade the host to 5.1 the vmotion works again.

Hi All,

I have a virtual machine showing as inaccessible after I think was some DRS issue.

The strange this is it appears to be bouncing between 3 different hosts from the summary page?

Any ideas where to start?

Thanks Jim.

VM on vSphere 5.5 is running on a snapshot vmdk and snapshot consolidation does not fix the problem

Sorry if the following is too long as this is my first post here in this community.

My VM (vmx-10) is running on the following vmdk, bddc12--000002.vmdk. There is no bddc12.vmdk in the datastore browser but there is a bddc12-000002-ctk.vmdk (I know its for the change block tracking). The vmx file is pointing to bddc12--000002.vmdk.I have gone through the snapshot consolidation process per KBs (1005049) and (1002310) and have this issue on one  other VM as well.

Attached is the vmx file and the vmware log from today.

Ideas ?

Thank you for any help provided.

RAID Hardware Question

$

Hi,

I currently have a single ESXi 5.5 host machine that supports only RAID 1 or 0 (Dell R410 with a SAS6i storage controller).  I want to upgrade (i.e. remove and replace physical hardware with a PERC6i) the RAID controller to support RAID 10.  A RAID 0 array is currently built with two hard drives, but they essentially empty - in other words, I am OK with losing the array and insignificant drive contents as a result of the controller hardware swap. Only one Guest OS (an Ubuntu instance) is utilizing this resource, and the physical RAID instance will obviously be provisioned/managed through the RAID BIOS (pre-boot).

1)  Is there anything (other than possibly a reboot of the physical host) that I need to do to have ESXi re-recognize the new controller to make it's resources (i.e. storage space) available to be provisioned to the Guest OS's?  Is there anything that I need to be aware of or watch out for?

2)  How is my Ubuntu (Guest OS) instance affected by the change (i.e. /dev/sdb1)?

I apologize in advance if I haven't made it all clear - VMware is very new to me (I am an optical networking architect by trade trying to learn more about the VM world).

Thanks so much in advance for the advice!

Clint

Install ESXI on z77x-UD3H MB

Hello Everyone.

I'm trying to install Esxi 5.5 or Esxi 6.0 on my home server with z77x-UD3H (Atheros AR8151) but everytime I get an error message that ESXI not able to detect my network driver. I tried the available VIB file (net-atl1e-1.0.1.14.x86_64.vib) on the internet and embed it on original ISO to create custom one However I get the same error.

Appreciate your kind advise to proceed with installation

unable to create new vSwitch

I was attempting to create a distributed switch in my home lab, after having no idea what i was doing, i deleted the VDS.

I attempted to re-create the old vSwitch and received an error while creating the vSwitch.

I tried rebooting the host, but this did not work.

Prior to creating the VDS, I had two nics port bound to iSCSI.

I did not remove the portbinding before deleting the vSwitch, and I think this may have broke the networking.

Is there a way to fix this?

resumeable suspend

I have a vm that is using a non persistent vmdk so every time it shuts down it does not change the vmdk. I also want to start it up when its already booted to cut down on the time that is needed to bring up the vm.

I read that in vmware 4 there was a way to tell the system to resume from a suspend every time you boot, but I don't see that option in esxi. I can modify the vmx file every time before I boot up the machine and just change the checkpoint.vmState to a vmss suspend file I have, but esxi deletes the file after it boots up. Is there a way to have it not delete the file? I could then just modify the vmx before I boot the machine.

I have tried:

Setting the vmss file as read only

Adding resume.repeatable = "true" to the config, but that did nothing.

Creating a link to the file "ln -s" thinking that it would delete the symbolic link, but not the original, but I was wrong and it deleted the link and the original.

I was going to try chattr +i to prevent root from deleting it, but chattr is not in the esxi system.

My question is "failed H:0x8 D:0x0 P:0x0 " what this indicates ...is it a host issue or storage issue

one of the vmware blog tell me that its " This status is returned when the HBA driver has aborted the I/O. It can also occur if the HBA does a reset of the target."  and some other blog says it's a storage array controller issue "https://communities.vmware.com/message/1695876 "

I m running host with ESXi 5.1 update 1 and my storage array arcastor SSD iscsi san. Can anyone please help with this issue ..? let me know if you need more details

Thank you

VMware ESXi 5 with BladeCenter E - BNT Copper 2/3 switch

I look desperately for help on switchs BNT Copper Layer 2-3 of BladeCenter E .

To be more precise:

I want to connect 3 externals ports of the switch BNT Copper Layer 2-3 of our BladeCenter E in a switch HP v1910-24G

BladeCenter switch BNT side:

Port EXT4: (VLAN 111 - Tagging enabled - PVID 111 - PVID Tagging Enabled) for VM 1 vlan

Port EXT5: (VLAN 777 - Tagging enabled - PVID 777 - PVID Tagging Enabled) for DMZ vlan

Port EXT6: (VLAN 400 - Tagging enabled - PVID 400 - PVID Tagging Enabled) for VMware Management

Every VLAN is in a different Spanning Tree Group.

switch HP side:

Port 2 in mode Trunk - pvid 400 to EXT6 of BladeCenter.

Port 4 in mode Trunk - pvid 111 to EXT4 of BladeCenter.

Port 6 in mode Trunk - pvid 777 to EXT5 of BladeCenter.

Flows do not pass between both switchs.

ESXi ping VLAN's interface internal BladeCenter switch ok.

If I put all vlan in the same Spanning Tree Group , flows pass between both switchs but make crash the HP switch.

Thks for your help

DirectPath I/O support for Haswell Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller

Hi,

Im building a new ESXi 5.5 system on Asus H87i-itx board with Intel i5 Haswell 4670T chip. Mainboard and CPU both support VT-d / DirectPath I/O so far as I can tell, but I have a problem.

In ESXi I can see most devices available for DirectPath I/O passthrough such as Video, Audio, NIC and USB controller, everything is available for DirectPath I/O passthrough except for Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller.

Can anybody help diagnose why the SATA controller is missing, and steps for more detailed debugging ?

Previous Cougar Point AHCI SATA controller is supported in ESXi so why not Lynx Point.

Also, Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller is listed on VMware HCL page here:

VMware Compatibility Guide: I/O Device Search   Intel "Lynx Point" Series Chipset 6-Port SATA AHCI  8086:8c02

Strange thing is my ESXi can see the Lynx Point SATA AHCI controller in Storage Adaptors correctly, showing 6 x VMHBA listed, so why does it not appear in passthrough, and not even greyed out ?

Is there any extra diagnostic I can do please tell me ?

Would like to avoid doing physical raw mapping (rdm) if possible, DirectPath I/O Passthrough would be much nicer method. :-)
