Problems Accessing Administrative Shares Remotely - Windows Srv 2012 cannot access \\Servername\ShareName

Found a fix today id like to share. Its a VM fault and hope im not doubling up the thread.

We have a freshly built Windows Server 2012 machine with a C:\ drive on the domain. When you add another disk once the server is built and create a share from it e.g D:\share you cannot connect to it remotely. You also receive this error in event logs:

An attempt to start/stop instance of service search host controller service on server (x) did not suceed. Re-run the action via UI or command line on teh specified server.

Access to path (x) is denied.

There is some implication with accessing administrative shares remotely from disks that have been added after the O/S is installed on VM’s (for server 2012).

Here is a technet article regading it: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/9807a799-bea3-46ad-92a5-732779135f98/

and a VM workaround: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1012225

The VM workaround worked for us but i hope a fix is released by VMWare soon.

Hope this helps anyone else seeing this problem with server 2012.

Thank you
